If you sort a list of month names in Excel, will January or April be first? No fooling, April is the first month, alphabetically. So, if you are not careful, sorting a list of month names may not get you what you wanted. You can however follow these steps to ensure that the list is sorted in proper calendar order.
First, select your list of month names.
Second, on the ribbon’s Home tab, click Sort & Filter, then click Custom Sort….
Third, click the down arrow in the Order column and chose Custom List….
Fourth, in the Custom Lists dialog box, choose January, February, March, April. Then, click OK to close the Custom Lists dialog box.
Finally, click OK to close the Sort dialog box.
