Microsoft OneNote is a fantastic tool. It allows you to create notes that include headings, tables, drawings, screenshots, photos, videos, spreadsheets, and links to files and web pages. Just like a school binder, you can have multiple tabs for different subjects. It’s perfect for creating daily to-do lists, tracking various projects, and it can even help you logging the time you spend on them.

To get the most out of OneNote, you can create and use various page templates that provide a pre-designed layout of headings, tasks, and other elements needed for each page. This saves you time as you don’t have to create the page from scratch.

However, for the longest time, it was frustrating to many that OneNote did not provide a direct method for editing the template. Here is a simple 7-step workaround you can use to edit and customize a OneNote template.

1. Open OneNote.

Begin by launching Microsoft OneNote on your device. Ensure you have the notebook open where you want to use the edited template.

2. Select Insert, Pages, Page Templates.

Navigate to the menu at the top and select Insert. Under Pages, choose Page Templates to access the template options available.

3. Expand the My Templates node.

In the Templates pane, find and expand the My Templates node. This will display all the custom templates you’ve created or saved previously.

4. Click on the template you want to edit.

From the list of templates, click on the one you wish to edit. This will open a new page based on the selected template.

5. Edit the new page.

Now, you can make the necessary changes and edits to the new page. Modify text, add elements, or adjust the layout according to your needs.

6. Click Save current page as a template.

Once you’re satisfied with your edits, go back to the Templates pane and select Save current page as a template. Give your edited template a new name to avoid confusion.

7. Delete the old template.

Finally, if you no longer need the old template, you can delete it by right-clicking on it in the My Templates list and selecting Delete.

If right-clicking does not give you a delete option, you will need to first change the section’s default template to “No Default Template“.

By following these steps, you can easily customize your OneNote templates to better suit your workflow and preferences. Happy note-taking!
